About Web Archiving
PAGE CONTENTS 1 minute read.
Due to the transient nature of web documents, the UNT Libraries Digital Projects Unit identifies, captures, and preserves web sites to keep the content available for future audiences. Our current focus is capturing web sites in the federal government domain–particularly web sites of closing agencies and commissions or web sites that are expected to change when newly elected officials take office. We also regularly capture our own unt.edu subdomains as well as topical content related to current events.
We are active members of the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) and have served in several capacities, including previous terms on the Steering Committee. Members of the UNT Libraries have worked as co-chairs of the Tools Development Portfolio, on the Partnership and Outreach Portfolio, on the Discretionary Funding Program selection committee, on the Web Archiving Conference program committee, and as co-lead on the Browser-Based Crawler project. We work collaboratively with other libraries and institutions to develop web crawling tools and procedures, and we undertake research in collection development and preservation of web archives.
