The UNT Music Library will host a summer Music Cataloging Institute June 10-14, 2024. Beginning music catalogers and out-of-practice music catalogers needing a refresher will benefit from this seminar-style, hands-on experience. The instructors will be Alice Sujana, Music Cataloging and Metadata Manager; Janelle West, Coordinator of Music Technical Services; and Blaine Brubaker, Music Cataloging and Metadata Librarian. Participants will create full catalog records for several items during the week.

The institute will begin at 9 a.m. Monday and conclude around noon Friday. Lunch and snacks will be provided all five days; all other meals, housing, and transportation are at the attendee’s expense. Options for accommodation will be provided upon inquiry.

Tuition and Registration

Tuition for the institute is $350. Space is limited to 10 registrants. Spots will be reserved on a first come, first served basis upon registration confirmation. Full payment must be made by credit card to confirm registration. Partial scholarships may be available to attendees with financial need.

Instruction will be based on Original RDA encoded in MARC. Participants should bring:

• A wireless internet enabled Windows laptop computer with Connexion Client loaded (guest login to the UNT network will be provided)
• Several music items to catalog (e.g. music scores, audio recordings, etc.), especially ones that might present cataloging difficulties. Participants unable to bring a laptop may be able to borrow one from UNT Libraries; indicate need at the time of registration.

Syllabus

Topics will be discussed in a seminar setting, immediately before being put to practical use in cataloging actual music materials. Participants will create full catalog records for several items during the week.

3. Cataloging tools and reference sources
4. Getting around in the Original RDA Toolkit
5. Describing manifestations and items, including scores and audio recordings
6. MARC fixed and coded fields
7. Agents (Persons and Corporate bodies): Description and access points
8. Musical Works and Expressions: Description and access points
9. Relationships
10. New terminology and concepts in the Official RDA Toolkit
11. Music subjects, genres, and medium of performance
12. Music classification (based on the LC M schedules)
13. From cataloging to the shelf: processing music materials
14. What public catalogs can do with RDA data
15. Practice, including solving specific problems
