On November 28, 1964, the Spacecraft Mariner 4 launched toward the Red Planet, sending back the first ever images of the Martian terrain a few months after landing. This feat was instrumental in human knowledge of our own solar system, and can be considered a predecessor to all the work being done to send a human to Mars in the coming decades.
